To overcome the lack of recognition of the professions of home help, the government has launched a campaign on 1 February, aimed to promote these jobs. Not far from 300 000 jobs could be created by 2030. What give a new breath to help at home and to accompany persons with disabilities and the elderly in their daily lives.
Trades open to all and with a future
If you doubt, help at home is a market in full boom. More and more people wish to remain in their homes during their entire lives. We believe of course, to the elderly. The transition from home to a retirement home is not always obvious. However, everyday life is not easy, especially when it comes to meet its needs. It is also the case for families with a disabled member. Meal preparation, grooming, running, cleaning, and taking of medication, these actions can be complicated for citizens who have reached a certain age or being disabled.
Currently, there are not far from 500 000 persons working as home help. This number, announced by the social Affairs, account for 98% of women. Average (mean) age of 45 years, they offer their service to the disabled, the elderly and workers for a range of services and varied. Some companions do not have a degree, other if. The secretary of State wishes to give a boost to these trades, which are not recognised by the State. By 2030, a government’s announcement has been made and 300 000 jobs could be created. The announcement also serves as a desire on the part of the government to offer a contract of indefinite duration for these trades. And the offer goes even further. The craft of accompanying in the home is not subject to a degree. Since the month of January 2016, the State can issue a diploma specific to this discipline, in order that it can be recognised. What give more values to this activity, performed by hundreds of thousands of people.
A request for upgrading of salary
Although the above-mentioned measures are expected by all, the question of salary remains a key point for associations and companions in the home. This work is not of any rest, either at psychological level or physical. And yet, the salaries are not at the height of their work. Today, 1 hour costs 24 €, when it is paid between 18 and 21. The association AD-PA request to the public authorities for a salary adjustment, in order to give more importance and merits of this branch of business. The government has therefore put in place a support fund for good practices. This substance, also helping with the restructuring of services, is particularly aimed at county councils. In fact, it was the latter who set rates for the intervention of aids at home.
Unfortunately, this aid will not solve certainly not all the problems that carers face in their business daily. All companions will tell you, the contact with humans is interesting and exciting. So far, the conditions in which they work are not the most relaxing. And this part of the population deplores that the government does not bring a viable solution to the wage level, and their health was impacted. In fact, in addition to spending time with the elderly or people with disabilities, it is important to measure the duration of the journey. The time spent on the road, the kilometres covered and the time devoted to the home must be taken into account. Unfortunately, the salary for a part-time, not exceeding 800 €, these companions are not to be paid their fair value. Exhausted and in lack of recognition, it is not uncommon to see many people abandon this job, yet considered as a profession of the future in the eyes of the government.
