Nice Côte d’azur : the economic attractiveness in question

Selected as a finalist among the candidate cities for the price of the European Capital of Innovation 2017, the metropolis Nice Côte d’azur puts the mouthfuls double to convince companies and investors of its economic attractiveness. Beyond the ambitions displayed by the municipality, which are on the ground, the strengths and weaknesses of the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes ? And what numbers can we leave this analysis on the companies of Nice.

Tourism : strength and weakness of the métropole niçoise

Riviera requires, Nice is a city whose economy is based in large part on tourism. This conditions both the employment area and the residential structure. The statistics of the INSEE emphasise, for example, that 15% of the units in nice are secondary residences, so that this proportion is typically only 1.1% in cities of comparable size.

In the same way, 76% of the jobs in the city are oriented towards activities with face-to-face, that is to say, the service in all its forms, in the direction of inhabitants in the year as well as the tourists. The tertiary sector is therefore over-represented in Nice since it falls to around 65% of the overall employment in the cities with the similar size.

This overweight in the tertiary sector, however, is not only due to tourism. In fact, it also stems from the age of the population. In the 2010 census, there are, in fact, on Nice Côte d’azur with 21.8% of persons aged 65 years and older, compared to 14.6% in the rest of France. The aging of the population niçoise and the strengthening of this class of idlers has a direct impact on the local economic fabric, which becomes dependent on both sector of activity and age class, at the expense of young assets, and other trades that could attract capital. Let us also note that the population narrowed slightly at Nice between 2006 and 2011, whereas it has a positive balance at the level of the region as a whole.

33 implementation projects in 2015

The region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’azur (PACA) region has, therefore, undertaken with the support of local municipalities and the various branches azuréennes of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), a policy of economic incentives and of territorial marketing. With success, it seems : in 2015, the different actors involved, such as the CCI PACA welcomed, for example, have managed to motivate 33 implementation projects and extensions of sites have been recorded around the Nice Côte d’azur.

Nearly half of these projects had related to the sector of information technology, while 12% were related to health. In contrast, a third of these funds went to projects related to the world of services. The habits die hard !

The industry, poor parent of the métropole niçoise ?

In a region as urbanized as the côte d’azur, the low share of the primary sector in the economy is not a surprise. Nice reveals, however, an industrial activity lower than that of other cities with comparable characteristics, probably because they have managed to attract large industrial players, as was done in Toulouse with Airbus or Bordeaux with Dassault, Thales and Safran.

High of 538 600 inhabitants in 2011, the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes account for less than 10% of assets in the secondary sector. On this ground, Nice does not lack, however, no assets ! The city has a large airport, the third in France, and enjoys an enviable geographic location, at the gates of the Alps, Italy and Monaco. The metropolis is, in addition, in the immediate vicinity of the famous area of Sophia Antipolis where are installed the activities, research and development of industrial companies, French or foreign.

These last, would they have made a false leap to Nice ? Today, the main company of which the seat is installed in the metropolis is the manufacturer of elevator Kone, in which the activity is estimated to be about 500 million euros per year. Apart from the health professional, Serex, the group Nice-matin, and the company mediterranean services of water, one falls after quickly firms whose scope does not exceed the region. Only the textile sector and the production boost slightly industrial activity local : Nice, for example, is the headquarters of the brand of ready-to-wear Façonnable.

An eco-valley in order to motivate innovative projects

At the scale of the metropolis, it is active, therefore for the strengthening of economic attractiveness. The city finances and orchestra several major projects that aim to boost the activity. In the lot, we found, for example, the creation of several districts, ecological eco-valley dedicated to innovative industries. Nice is also working on the transformation of its railway stations and airports, interchanges, multimodal, and develops an international business district on a large scale that will host in term of business incubators and incubators for startup.

She finally has a vehicle of support to investment, which takes the form of a unit to accompany the newcomers in terms of financial engineering, research of real estate and build a network of business partners.
