BSE Sensex closed at 31,662.74, up 0.77 points while the 50-share Nifty ended at 9,934.90, up 19 points or 0.19 per cent.

                              Shares of Mahindra and Mahindra (up 2.02 per cent), Bajaj Auto (up 1.51 per cent), Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (up 1.24 per cent) and Sun Pharma (up 1.06 per cent) surged on BSE.

                              However, stocks such as ITC (down 1.89 per cent), Bharti Airtel (down 1.36 per cent), Tata Motors (down 1.17 per cent) and Coal India (down 0.96 per cent) wiped off gains.

                              “Despite opening in positive territory, markets traded on a decidedly volatile note today. Leading the pack of gainers were metals and auto stocks with the respective indices gaining 1.26 per cent and 0.88 per cent, in trade,” said Karthikraj Lakshmanan, Senior Fund Manager – Equities, BNP Paribas Mutual Fund.

                              Broader markets fared better with BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices hitting fresh record highs of 15,853 and 16,395, respectively, in trade.

                              BSE Midcap index added 119 points or 0.76 per cent to eventually end the day at 15,823. Shares of Nation Aluminium (up 12.01 per cent), Tata Chemicals (up 6.95 per cent), Indiabulls Housing Finance (up 3.88 per cent) and Bajaj Financial Services (up 3.20 per cent) were the top gainers on the index, lifting market sentiment.

                              BSE Small cap index was at 16,329.92, up 75 points or 0.46 per cent at day’s end as stocks such as Future Enterprises, 63Moons, TI, Soril Infra, morepen Laboratories, Dia Power and Punj Lloyd surged over 19 per cent each.

                              Barring Nifty FMCG (down 0.64 per cent)and Nifty Media (down 0.02 per cent), all sectoral indices ended the day in the green.

                              The Nifty Realty index hit a fresh 52-week high of 292 in trade and closed the session 0.80 per cent up at 289.40.

                              Among specific stocks, shares of Nestle advanced 2.71 per cent after the company said that it is focusing on supporting home cooking with healthier options by introducing a few initiatives such as simplifying ingredients, reducing sodium and increasing micronutrient fortification among other.

                              Globally, China’s blue-chip CSI300 index slid 0.5 per cent to 3,829.87 points, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.6 per cent to 3,365.50 points.

                              In Europe, pan-European STOXX 600 benchmark was down 0.1 per cent, Reuters reported.
